Western Thought

I think it is useful to study the lives of people who have made significant contributions to the world. Everyone has their favorite list of people. Here is a small list of people that I found interesting to read about. Of course there are many many good people in every field of endeavor.

What I like about the Physicist Albert Einstein is that he sat there with a pencil and paper and nothing else and dreamt up all kinds of theories and out of that came a deep and accurate understanding of nature. Also the theory was very practical in that it led to the discover of Atomic energy and many other things.   I think in Wing Chun you can also just sit there with a pencil and a piece of paper and dream up most of the system. It is very logical and also very practical.

What I like about the mathematician Andrew Wiles is that he also sat in his attic for eight years with a paper and a pencil and solved one of the most difficult mathematical problems ever. How difficult? Well for 300 years the world's best mathematician's failed to solve the problem. I like the problem because everyone can understand the problem. It's simple but the solution is more than 200 pages long and can only be understood by a handful of experts who specialize in the field.  I look at this as a real tribute to the human mind. In no way can Wing Chun be equated with these great achievements but the system to me qualifies as a masterful piece of applied mathematics. If your brain can think beyond kickboxing or the ultimate fights then very many academic paths can be explored in Wing Chun.
