Wing Chun Classes

Overview

I have been teaching Wing Chun in Victoria since 1980. The first class was a group of six ladies from Taiwan who were attending St. Margaret's for ESL classes. In 1985 I offered public classes at the YM-YWCA. Since then I taught at the University and at various recreation centers. An all woman's club was formed in Chinatown in 1988.  Since 1980 we have generated 15 Wing Chun instructors.  Currently we are trying to follow the Wing Chun path outlined by Master Kenneth Chung who is the student of Leung Sheung, the first student of the late Grandmaster Yip Man. .Our students have included black belt instructors in Karate, Judo, Aikido, Taekwondo and various other fighting arts. I have taught members of the Saanich and Victoria police, medical doctors, lawyers, teachers, University students, and children as young as 12 years of age and senior citizens.

My teaching approach

My teaching approach is very informal. I don't like to emphasize tournament fighting in the interest of safety and to prevent EGO problems. We don't use a ranking system because we generally have small classes where this becomes unnecessary. Students just wear comfortable clothes and runners or shoes on the feet. I don't run my classes in the military style. I run it in a friendly manner as an enjoyable art to learn and master.
