Technical Note #8

Trying to Define Wing Chun

Wing Chun is the art of using positioning, sensitivity and timing to balance the opponent’s speed and power.

If position is defined as location in time and space (x,y,z,t coordinates) then :

Wing Chun is the art of using positioning to balance the opponent’s speed and power.

If power is defined such that it also incorporates the idea of speed then:

Wing Chun is the art of using positioning to balance the opponent’s power.

But this doesn’t distinguish it from other arts so:

Wing Chun is the art of minimizing the positioning required to balance the opponent’s power.

Hence: the three most important things:

  1. Position
  2. Sensitivity
  3. Timing

 Are replaced by:

  1. Position
  2. Position
  3. Position

Ability to detect change and ability to change is part of the art. This shouldn’t be muddled up with the idea of position since it is a skill or ability or an intelligence thing.

Wing Chun is the art of change in order to minimize the positioning required to balance the opponent’s power.
