8 Chopping Knife Form

The 8 chopping knife is a practical close range weapon. If you think of a Chinese chef who uses a cleaver everyday then you see the practicality. The Wang Kiu version of the form has 82 movements which when added to the 27 spear or pole movements, make up 108 movements. Who designed this I don't know. The Wang Kiu knife form consists of 8 sections. Actually there are just four pieces with a right and a left part.  Each section starts with some warm up knife actions. The knife curriculum includes the form, the knife vs the sword, some drills and then freestyle knife sparring. Over the years I looked at many "authentic" Wing Chun knife forms. All were different but all shared common movements such as poking, chopping, Gan, Kwun, Man, Lan, Jum etc. Some people flip the knives which you can't do with a kitchen cleaver. I don't think there was ever an official knife form. Actually even in the Hung style I learned, a variety of weapons forms were constructed easily by the instructor from the basic movements.
