Class Notes

The following are various handouts I have given to students over the years to help them learn the art of Wing Chun. The most common request that comes up is "Can you give me a list of the movements." So I have included a list of the movements from all of our forms. The next popular question is "What drills can we do?"  So I have also included some ideas for drills. Also I have various theory and philosophy notes just to keep people thinking. It's amazing how such a seemingly simple art like Wing Chun can generate so much thought. But this is the characteristic of all great arts which include Chess and Go.

Lesson #3

Learn the techniques of Pak sau (Slapping hand) and Lap sau (Grabbing hand).

Learn the Single Sticking Hands exercise.

  1. Both sides are in the neutral stance.  One side does continuous chain punches, not too fast. The other side applies a slapping hand to the outside of the punch. For example a left punch is met with a right outside slapping hand. The slapping hand should feel relaxed and sticky like a wet rag. The other hand should be in the guarding hand position with the fingers pointing up to the ceiling. The elbows should be one fists distance from the body. Maybe one punch a second is a good rhythm, but experiment. Concentrate on good position and not moving anything unnecessarily. Don’t bob the head around.
  2. Both side are in the neutral stance. Cross the right arm with your partner’s right arm. The left hands are in the guarding hand position. Then one side applies a slapping hand combined with a punch towards the opponent’s chest. Repeat 5 or ten times and then let your partner have a turn. Keep the vertical position, don’t bend and move and squirm. The head doesn’t move, everything is done in a relaxed way. A variation is to alternate. One side slaps, then the other side slaps. Repeat everything
  3. Both sides are in the neutral stance. Cross the right arm with our partner’s right arm. Then one side applies a grabbing hand maybe five or ten times in a row and then switch roles. After this apply a simultaneous punch to the chest or a vertical palm to the nose area or a palm to the chin. Try a grab from the outside and also a grab from the inside.

Practice the Little Idea Form each day. Look in the mirror to check your position. Pay attention to your feeling to see if there is a strain somewhere. Try to relax completely. Check if you are following the five body guidelines above.
