Technical Note #8

Why a Laundry Basket is Good?

When you encounter a force there are a variety of choices. One way is to let the force pass. Don't interfere with the direction of the force. Try find some solution that doesn't require strength. The Little Idea Form teaches that the Tan sau to Bong sau change. If a force is applied to your Bong sau, then that force changes your Bong sau into a Tan sau automatically. Your brain doesn't need to think "Oh, I better change my Tan sau into a Bong sau."  Then if you have a Bong sau and the force goes towards your elbow , your Bong sau automatically changes to a Tan sau. Sometimes I tell students to think about a laundry basket on the floor. If you push that laundry basket with your foot, then the laundry basket does the most economical thing and moves just enough to let the force pass by. It does nothing more or nothing less than that. It's defense is perfect yet it is very stupid. We are very smart but sometimes we are so smart that we think of too many things and can't come up with a simple solution to a problem.  Sometimes by just relaxing and going into feeling mode a solution can be attained which conforms with the idea of "Receive the Incoming Force." Real fighting involves a lot more factors of course. Sometimes we yield but at other times we can disrupt the incoming force. Everything depends on the magnitude, direction and timing of the force.
